Purpose of this lesson: To teach children that everyone is special, everyone is different, and that God created and loves all people. In like manner, God want us to love and respect others.
Small children tend to be very accepting. They don't often judge others by appearance. They don't take note of another child's skin color, physical disability, social status, size or shape. But, unfortunately, as they grow older youngsters begin to pick up on Satan's destructive wave length and the seeds of division are planted. They begin to judge others by outward appearance.
We want to be sure that we lay a strong foundation in our young children. We want to teach them that God wants us to love everyone. That God made mankind in many different shapes, sizes and colors because he likes variety. Each person is special to God. Romans 2:11 tells us that there is no respect of persons with God. Galations 3:28-29 points out that there is neither Jew nor Greek, bond nor free, male nor female; for we're one in Christ. I Pet. 1:17 tells us that God doesn't judge us by outward appearance, but by how we live our lives.
Small children, of course, can't comprehend this thoroughly. In this lesson we want to lay a foundation of acceptance and respect for others.
Because these lessons are intended to be springboards for your own lesson plans we don't intend to give you a step by step outline of what you're to teach and how you're to teach it.
We provide a short story of two young children who learn that all people are a part of God's creation and are special in His sight. If you choose to incorporate this into your lesson you might like to bring a few different varieties of flowers to class and, after reading the story, point out the beauty of each one. For example one is a nice bright color, one smells sweet, one has a cheerful look to it and so forth. Children should be asked what they think makes each flower special.
If you wish to use music with your lesson, the song "Jesus Loves the Little Children" can be sung.
The activity provided with this lesson is designed to help children learn that people come in many different colors, shapes and sizes. Simply print off the number of copies desired. Once you've run off your copies, we suggest you draw in some sample faces and color them LIGHTLY so the children can see a sample and have something to work off from. Be sure and remind the children that they need to color the faces lightly so as not to cover up their drawing. Perhaps provide a brown crayon, a yellow crayon, a black crayon and a peach colored crayon to color the skin with. Encourage them to work slowly and carefully - including eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth. Some of the younger children will just scribble them in - that's fine. Point out that each one looks different from the other, and that they're all special.
Usually the amount of time you have for a lesson won't allow for much more than the story (with discussion) and the activity. But if would like to cover more, or have a little older class, it's suggested you go to the Parental Involvement and use some of the suggestions found there.
