Too often in this world there is division among the human family. People judge others by the color of their skin, how they dress, where they live, their dialect, how much money they make, how 'beautiful' they are, and more. We want our children to know that this isn't how God looks at a person. We what them to know that God doesn't play favorites. He created ALL mankind and loves each and everyone of them. Even when a person makes a mistake, and does something bad, God still loves them. When a person is really sorry for doing something wrong God forgives them and forgets the bad thing they did. This is known as God's grace.
We want to make sure that the children know, however, that God doesn't like it when we do something bad and that often we have to be punished for our actions. (I Cor. 12:6-10)
God wants us to love others the same way He loves us. That's why he gave us ten simple rules to live by. The ten commandments - the first four showing us how to love God the last six showing us how to love our fellow man.
You may wish to point out that just as we are all now members of the human family, we will someday have the chance to become part of God's family.
If the instructor has used the story about Sally and Sam you might want to ask your child what they learned from the story. Hopefully you'll be able to view a copy of the story yourself and go over it occasionally with your children.
Those wishing to follow up with outside helps might look for a book showing the different countries and the people who live there. Preferably one with illustrations of people dressed in native attire.
You could explain to your child that everyone has the same general needs, hopes and fears, and that God loves all of us as His own special children. God wants us all to be happy and live at peace with one another.
On the opposite side you could point out that when we don't love one another people get hurt. Explain that if enough people don't get along we can have what is called war - people from one country fighting with people from another country.
The class project for this lesson gave children a chance to draw in facial features and color different 'kinds' of faces. If this project has been used by your child, you might like to find something nice to say about each face, showing that each one is special in its own way.
If you wish to open your Bible and go over a few Bible verses with your child you might find the following verses a good jumping off point. They are only a few of the many verses that speak about God's love for all humanity.
God is love. (I John 4:16)
If God so loved us, we should love one another. (I John 4:11)
Don't we all have the same Father? Didn't God make us all? (Mal. 2:10)
