      Teaching Children the Ten Commandments

The Bible tells us that if we train up children in the way they should go, when they are old they won't depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 We know that Timothy was taught the scriptures from early childhood. 2 Timothy3:15 and God was pleased with Abraham, not only because he kept his laws, but because He knew he would teach them to his children. Genesis 18:19 God gave Moses the ten commandments so that he could teach them to the children of Israel. Exodus 24:12

Jesus warned in Matthew 5:19 "Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

As parents and teachers in this present age, when the ten commandments have been throw out of our federal offices and removed from our classrooms, we are given the responsibility of teaching children the importance of keeping God's laws. Sadly, many have strayed from those Godly principles, and the world has suffered, and continues to suffer, for it.

Jesus told us that His yoke was easy, and His burden was light. Matthew 11:30 John wrote, "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous." 1 John 5:3 It is not a heavy burden we ask our children to take on, but one that will lead to happiness Proverbs 29:18

God declared, in Deuteronomy 5:29 "O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!"

Keeping God's laws leads to happiness. Pr 29:18

Paul delighted in the law of God in the inward man. Yet Paul knew that none of us is perfect, Romans 3:10. In verse 23 Paul tells us that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. We all make mistakes and break God's law. John tells us that sin is the breaking of God's law; "Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." 1 John 3:4

Since we have all sinned, and God's Word tells us that the wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23, we have all come under the death penalty.

The good news is that the rest of the verse tells us; "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

It is not the keeping of the law that saves us. We are saved by the sacrifice of Jesus and His resurrection from the dead. Romans 5:10

Does this mean that we can continue to sin, because Jesus took our sins on His own shoulders?

Paul asked that question in Romans 6:1 "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?" His answer in the next verse is, "God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" Paul knew that we shouldn't continue to live in sin once we become converted.

Because we are human, we will make mistakes. When that happens we are told to repent and try and do better. Acts 3:19; 26:20

However, one must remember Paul's warning in Hebrews 10:26-29 "For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?"

Continuing to commit a act we know is sin with the belief that God will forgive us when we repent, can be a very dangerous mind-set.

God is love. 1 John 4:16 And He wants us to practice love by the keeping of His commandments. Ro 13:9

Psalms 19: 7-8 Tells us that he law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

The Bible tells us that those who keep God's law are blessed. Psalms 119:1 Those who keep God law are HAPPY. Proverbs 29:18

The law is consistent - it doesn't change, and will remain. Luke 16:17

Not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. Romans 2:13

We must always remember that it isn't the doing of the law that wins us salvation. That is a free gift!

The law shows us what sin IS. Romans 7:7

God's law is a way of LOVE toward man and God. Luke 10:27

The law is our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ. Galatians 3:24

If you fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well. James 2:8

The ten commandments have been God's law from the beginning of creation, 2 John 1:6. They are the same commandments that Jesus kept as an example for us, John 15:10; I Peter 2:21; 1 John 2:6 and the same commandments that Christians will be obeying when Jesus returns. Revelations 14: 13; Revelations 22:14

It is, perhaps, best summed up by Solomon when he wrote: Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole [duty] of man.
