When You Pray

When Jesus was on the earth as a man He taught many lessons. One of the things Jesus taught His followers was how to pray. Using the Lord's Prayer as our guideline, we have come up with a few ideas that might help children more effectively follow our Lord's instructions - The words Jesus spoke are in red - our thoughts are in blue. We suggest parents and teachers go to the bible and read the Lord's Prayer for themselves before teaching this lesson. Use as much or as little of this lesson as you like, taking into consideration the child's age and level of understanding, as well as your own personal beliefs.

"Our Father"

GOD IS OUR FATHER

Think of God as a loving Father

A Father who is stronger, wiser, and more loving than anyone on earth.

A Father who is eager to hear what you have to say.

"Which art in heaven"

GOD IS IN HEAVEN

God's throne is one of power and beauty.

"Hallowed be Your name"

PRAISE AND HONOR GOD'S NAME

Rehearse how Great God Is.

The following are just a few of the things we can think of to get a little grasp of God's greatness:

Things God has done for us and others (examples: parents job, home to live in, food to eat, clothes to wear, bed to sleep in, family to love us, and for us to love)

Things God is going to do (examples: raise all dead back to life, protect us from harm, make a wonderful world of peace)

God's mercy & love (examples: forgives us when we do wrong, helps us even when we forget to ask, gave of Himself so that we might someday live forever as a part of His Family.)

How good God's laws are and how following them leads to happiness (examples: Law against hate (murder) stealing, lying & cheating; God's laws that protect the family, don't commit adultery, honor your father and mother)

As a child of God seek help in setting a good example (reflecting well on the Family name)

Ask for God's spirit to direct your steps (example: help me react correctly to the school bully, the unfriendly teacher, the negative peer pressure)

Help me be a positive, helpful family member (examples: to fulfill my responsibilities (chores) and be friendly to everyone, to keep control of my temper)

May I be a good Christian example to my friends (example: to do right things and stand up for God's way without coming of as self righteous - thinking myself to be better than others)

May I develop the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, self-control

"Your kingdom come"

PRAY FOR GOD'S KINGDOM TO COME TO EARTH

Talk with God about how badly the people of the earth need God and His government

The people going hungry around the world

People suffering because of other peoples actions (example: anger, lying, cheating, drunk drivers, wars, lonely old people)

Help Your work

Bless, inspire and protect your workers

Provide the money your work needs

Open new doors to preach the gospel

Show me through the study of Your Word Your truth so that I will know how to better live my life as a Christian example and so that I'll have a good answer should anyone ask me why I believe the things I do.

"Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven"

GOD'S WILL BE DONE

Grant the people of God more of Your spirit so we can be better Christians, living by the spirit of the law

Please send Your Son as soon as possible so that God's ways will cover the earth as the waters the ocean floor

"Give us this day our daily bread."

PRAY OUR PHYSICAL NEEDS ARE MET

Bless us with good, healthy food

Provide us nice clothing

Provide us money for our home and protect it

Grant us good health

Provide our family with a good steady income

Send your angels to protect us from all harm

PRAY FOR OUR SPIRITUAL NEEDS

Supply us with sound material that will help us with our study of your word

Help me develop my talents and gifts so I can be a more profitable servant

"And forgive us our sins"

FORGIVE US OUR SINS

Forgive me the sins I know about but have trouble overcoming. Grant me the strength to overcome in the future.

Forgive me the sins I'm not aware of and help me to become aware of them and to overcome them.

"As we forgive those who have sinned against us"

FORGIVE THOSE WHO SIN AGAINST ME

Forgive those who may have said things about me that they shouldn't have said

Forgive those who hate me because of my race or our religion and may they see their mistake and change

Forgive anyone else who may have sinned against me, and help me to love them in spite of the hurt they may have caused.

"Lead us not into temptation" (trials)

PRAY FOR OTHERS

Those with money problems<

Those who may be struggling to overcome a sin

Protect those who are in danger<

Provide fellowship for the lonely.

Help me be aware of anyone who has a need in that area and help me be a friend to them

Comfort those who have lost a loved one

"But deliver us from the Evil One"

PRAY FOR PROTECTION

Protection from natural things (examples: accidents, sickness, forces of nature)

Protect us from Satan (examples: protect us from his negative broadcasting, protect us from his anger)

Help us to resist Satan by drawing closer to God so that Satan will flee from us

"For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever"

CONCLUDING PRAISE TO GOD

Thank God for calling you out of this sin sick world and giving you a chance to be a part of His soon coming kingdom.

Ask for help in growing in wisdom and knowledge so you will be able to help all those who are without understanding now and in the future as a spiritual Son of God.

"Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you."

John 16: 23

IN JESUS NAME WE PRAY

Jesus is not only our High Priest, but our Older Brother. He knows our hearts because He was once human as we are, only without sin.

Pray that we will become more like our Older Brother and thank Him for making it possible for us to talk with God, our Father and His.

Thank God the Father for the sacrifice of His Son

AMEN

Amen means, "So be it"

Remember Matt. 21: 22 "And all things, whatsoever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive."
