AS SO OFTEN HAPPENS when people lose sight of God, there was strife and war among the kingdoms of men.
The kings of Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela formed an alliance with the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah, and fought against the kings of the lands of Elam, Goiim, Shinar and Ellasar.
The battle lines were drawn in the Valley of Siddim, a land full of tar pits. As the day wore on it became evident that the invading kings and their armies were going to be victorious. The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah were forced into retreat. Many of the soldiers who fled fell into tar pits, with the rest hastening toward the safety of the distant hills.
The enemy plundered the land, taking all the valuables they could get their hands on.
Lot, who lived on the outskirts of Sodom, didn't escape. The great wealth that he had accumulated was taken spoil, while he and his family were carried off into captivity.
When Abram learned what had happened to Lot he armed three hundred and eighteen of his servants and set out in pursuit.
Looking to God for help, Abram quietly encircled the camp at night. Taken by surprise the enemy didn't know how many men were attacking them. Fearing the worst, they fled to the mountains, leaving behind all the spoils of battle, including the captives, of whom Lot and his family were a part.
As they returned home, Melchizedek, King of Peace, Priest of the Most High God, met them with bread and wine.
"Blessed be Abram of the God Most High," Melchizedek said. "Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed by the God Most High who has delivered your enemies into your hand."
Abram, who knew and practiced God's law on tithing, gave Melchizedek a tenth of all that he possessed.
The king of Sodom offered Abram a reward for his efforts, but Abram wisely refused. He knew that if he accepted anything from this human ruler there was a good chance that the king of Sodom would claim that it was he, and not God, who had made Abram rich.
