Sarah lived to be one hundred and twenty-seven years old. She died in the land of Canaan and there Abraham mourned for Sarah. When he arose from beside his dead wife, he told the people of the land, "I am an alien and a stranger among you. Please sell me some land so that I may bury my dead."
The Hittites answered Abraham, "Sir, you are a great prince among us. You may bury your dead in the best of our tombs, for none will deny you their tomb for burying your dead."
Then Abraham bowed down before the people of the land and said to the Hittites, "If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and talk with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf, so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which he owns and is on the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for full price as a burial site among you."
Ephron the Hittite heard what Abraham requested and told Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites, "No, my lord. I give you the field and the cave that is in it. In the presence of my people, I give it to you. Bury your dead."
Once more Abraham bowed before the people of the land and he said to Ephron in the hearing of all, "Please respect my request. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so that I can bury my dead."
Ephron answered Abraham, "My lord, the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between me and you? Bury your dead."
Abraham weighted out for Ephron the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants.
So Ephron's field in Machpelah near Mamre - both field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field - was bought by Abraham. Then Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre, which is at Hebron, in the land of Canaan. So the field and the cave in it were owned by Abraham, purchased from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site.
