      Rebekah

The maiden ran and told her family what had happened.

Rebekah had a brother named Laban. When Laban saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard Rebekah's story he ran out and found the man who stood by his camels at the well. And Laban said, "Come in, you who are blessed of the LORD. What are you standing out here for? I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels."

Then Abraham's servant went with Laban. The camels were given straw and provender and there was water to wash the stranger's dusty feet, and the feet of those men who had traveled with him. But when Laban invited the man to eat with them, Abraham's servant declined. "I will not eat until I have told my errand," he told them.

"Tell us then," Laban said, no doubt wondering who this man was, and why he had given his sister such expensive gifts.

"I am Abraham's servant," the man explained. "The Lord has blessed my master greatly; and he has become great. He has given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and donkeys. And Sarah my master's wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him has he given all that he has. And my master made me swear, saying, 'Don't choose a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell. But go to my father's house, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son from there.' And I asked my master, 'What if the woman will not follow me.?' And he said unto me, 'The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you, and prosper your way; and you shall take a wife for my son from my kindred, and from my father's house. If girl refuses to come with you, then you will be free of your oath.'

"Today I came to the well, and prayed, 'Bless my efforts and show kindness to my master. See, I'm standing by Hebron's well where the women come to draw water. Let it happen that the girl to whom I say, "Lower your pitcher, please, that I may drink," and she answers, "Drink, and I'll give your camels water also," let her be the one you've selected to be Isaac's wife. That way I'll know that you have answered my prayer and shown your kindness to my master.' And before I had done speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came with her pitcher on her shoulder and went down unto the well, and drew water.

"When I saw this, I said to her, 'Let me please drink a little water from your pitcher.' And she quickly took her pitcher from off her shoulder, and said, 'Drink, and I will draw water for your camels also, until they have done drinking.' When I asked her, whose daughter she was she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him.' Then I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who led me in the right way, so I might take my master's brother's daughter unto his son. And now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may know what I am to do next."

Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, "This is from the LORD: we cannot speak either bad or good. Behold, Rebekah is before you, take her, and go, and let her be your master's son's wife, as the LORD has spoken."

When Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed down and worshipped the LORD. Then the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah. He gave also to her brother and to her mother many precious things.

And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and spent the night. Then he awoke in the morning he said, "Send me away unto my master."

But her brother and her mother said, "Let the girl stay with us a few days, at least ten, after that she shall go."

The servant warned, "Hinder me not, seeing the LORD has prospered my way. Send me away now, that I may go to my master."

And they answered, "We will call Rebekah, and ask her what she wants to do."

So they called Rebekah. When they asked her, "Will you go with this man?" she said, "I will go."

Then they let Rebekah go. Knowing what God had promised to Abraham they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, "You are our sister, may you be the mother of thousands of millions, and let your seed possess the gate of those who hate them."

Rebekah left with her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men. Rebekah and her maids rode upon the camels, and followed behind the man.

As Isaac was going out to meditate in the field in the evening he lifted up his eyes and saw the camels coming toward him. And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she took a veil, and covering her face, got down off the camel. For she had asked the servant, "What man is this that walks in the field to meet us?" And the servant had said, "It is my master."

The servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. Isaac happily brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah's tent. Rebekah became his wife, and he loved her. Thus Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.
