Now Jesus really set to work on His ministry. After Peter, Andrew, James and John left their occupation as fishermen near Capernium to follow Jesus, they went into the city and into the synagogue on the Sabbath, probably the next day.

Jesus taught in the synagogue that Sabbath and those who were there were amazed at His teachings. He didn't teach in a wishy-washy way like the scribes did but with great authority. He could do this because He was the One who had written all of the scriptures through the hand of men and knew not only exactly what they said but exactly what they meant.

Attending the synagogue that Sabbath was a man who was possessed by a demon. The demon knew exactly who Jesus was, the Creator God, and shouted out, "Let us alone, Jesus of Nazereth! What do you have to do with us; have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: you're God's Holy One!"

Jesus stopped its shouting, saying, "Hold your tongue and get out of that man!" The demon convulsed the man and departed from him with a loud scream.

The people were amazed and spoke among themselves, "What's going on? He speaks with great authority and even commands the demons and they obey!" And word of what he had said and done spread all over region of Galilee.

When they left the synagogue, Jesus, Simon, Andrew, John and James went to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a high fever and those of the household quickly told Jesus, who went to her and helped her out of bed. The fever immediately left her and she made them welcome and comfortable.

The religious leaders had made a rule that healing was not to be done on the Sabbath, though there is no such law in the scriptures. So after sunset the people of Capernium brought many sick people to him. The whole population of the town gathered in front of Simon and Andrew's house and Jesus healed all kinds of diseases and infirmities and cast out many demons. He did not allow the demons to say a word, for they knew He was the Creator of the universe, and Jesus didn't want it known so early in His ministry.

The next morning, before daylight, Jesus went out into the country, away from the crowds, to pray in private. After the others were up they went looking for Jesus and when they found Him they told Him that everyone was looking for Him.

So He said, "Let's go to the next town so that I can preach there, because that is one of the reasons that I came to the earth." And so they went throughout all Galilee, Jesus preaching in the synagogues and healing all kinds of diseases and casting out demons. News of this traveled for a hundred miles so that the sick were brought to Him from all over, and He healed them.
